Trinniberg upsets in Breeders' Cup Sprint

ARCADIA, Calif., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Trinniberg took the lead in the stretch and went on to post a 13-1 upset in Saturday's $1.5 million Breeders' Cup Sprint.

With Willie Martinez aboard, Trinniberg was well placed behind a fast pace in the 14-horse cavalry charge at 6 furlongs around one turn on the Santa Anita main track.

As they straightened out for the stretch run, Martinez found a path to the front and before his rivals could get into high gear, Trinniberg was gone. The Lumber Guy lumbered home 1 length in arrears, followed by Smiling Tiger and early leader Sum of the Parts.

Defending champion Amazombie had nothing left for the stretch run. Trainer Bob Baffert's duo of Coil and Fast Bullet both misfired.

Shivananda Parbhoo trains Trinniberg, a 3-year-old Teuflesberg colt who started his year on the Kentucky Derby trail.

After he finished 17th in the Run for the Roses, Parbhoo redirected his colt to sprints, and he posted a win and two seconds in his next four tries in Florida, New York and Pennsylvania. He now has five wins from 13 starts overall.
