Vinci advances to Luxembourg Open quarters

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Roberta Vinci of Italy advanced to the quarterfinals of the Luxembourg Open Thursday with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Anne Keothavong.

Vinci will face American Venus Williams, who downed ninth-seed Mona Barthel 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, in a quarterfinal match Friday.

In other second-round matches, Monica Niculescu beat second-seeded Julia Jankovic 6-4, 6-2; German Andrea Petkovic defeated No. 3 Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-0; Ksenia Pervak downed No. 6 Sorana Cirstea 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and Daniela Hantuchova bested Kirsten Flipkens, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at Luxembourg's CK Sportcenter Kockelscheuer.

Petkovic meets Pervak, Lordes Dominguez Lino faces off against Hantuchova and Lucie Hradecka plays Niculescu in Friday's other quarterfinal matches.
