Prep coach has long criminal record

WEST PARK, Fla., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A Florida youth coach who knocked a referee to the ground during a football game has an extensive criminal record, a Broward County official said.

Sheriff Al Lamberti said he wonders why Dion Robinson, 43, was allowed to coach children in the first place, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Robinson of West Park, Fla., has a record that includes aggravated assault, assault with a firearm and multiple arrests for cocaine distribution, Lamberti said.

The assistant coach for the West Park Saints youth team now faces assault charges for hitting referee Andrew Keigans so hard, he fell to the ground.

Keigans was attacked after he called a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct against the Saints during Saturday's game with the Miramar Patriots.

West Park Mayor Eric H. Jones said he plans to ask the city administrator whether background checks are conducted for coaches.
