Red Wings' announcer Budd Lynch dies

DETROIT, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Longtime Detroit Red Wings public address announcer Budd Lynch has died at age 95, the team announced Tuesday.

Lynch, who was injured in the Canadian Army's D-Day invasion of France and was awarded the Hockey Hall of Fame's Foster Hewitt Award in 1985, had a long career as the Red Wings' radio and television voice, including broadcasting Detroit's first televised hockey game in 1949, before working in the team's publicity office.

He retired in 1982 and unretired after a two-week vacation to work as the public address announcer at Red Wings' home games, the Detroit News reported Tuesday.
