NFL: Seattle 16, Carolina 12

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Seattle's Russell Wilson threw for a career-high 221 yards and the Seahawks forced Cam Newton into a key fumble Sunday in their 16-12 win over Carolina.

Wilson completed 19-of-25 passes, including a go-ahead touchdown to Golden Tate late in the third quarter.

The Seahawks (3-2), however, had to fend off a late Panthers charge when punter Jon Ryan was forced to take a safety after receiving a high snap while kicking from his end zone.

That narrowed Seattle's lead to two points and Carolina's Newton staged a last-chance drive to get into field goal range. But he was sacked by Bruce Irvin, who forced a fumble recovered by the Seahawks.

Steven Hauschka supplied three field goals for Seattle.

Newton was held to 141 passing yards and 42 yards on the ground for Carolina (1-4).
