Maldonado, driving for Williams, finished the 3.152-mile tour in 1:46.804 and will start in the front row for the second time this season.

Sebastian Vettel -- the two-time defending F1 champion -- took the No. 3 position. Vettel won the 61-lap Singapore race last year.

"It's a good position to start from," said Vettel. "It's a long race tomorrow, and a lot of things can happen."
