Wozniacki among Seoul quarterfinalists

SEOUL, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Caroline Wozniacki earned a place in the quarterfinals of the Korean Open tennis championship with a straight-set win Thursday.

Wozniacki dispatched Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3 in a second-round match. Wozniacki won two-thirds of the points on serve and 53 percent when receiving. She had a pair of breaks in each set and lost her own serve only once.

She advances to Friday's quarterfinals against seventh-seeded Klara Zakopalova, who was a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) winner over Magdalena Rybarikova in her second-round match. Zakopalova fought off all five of the break points she faced.

Also in that half of the draw Thrusday, eighth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova stopped Jamie Hampton 6-3, 7-5 behind four breaks. She is paired against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the next round. Martinez Sanchez was given a walkover victory when fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova couldn't play due to a lower back injury.

Other matches Thursday saw sixth-seeded Varvara Lepchenko defeat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-1 and Tamira Paszek breeze past Lee So-ra 6-2, 6-0 in 50 minutes. Lepchenko and Paszek are to play each other Friday.

The fourth quarterfinal was set Wednesday with third-seeded Kaia Kanepi taking on Kiki Bertens.
