Begu advances on Tashkent Open upset win

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Irina-Camelia Begu battled through an upset of third-seeded Alize Cornet in Wednesday's second-round play of the Tashkent Open tennis tournament in Uzbekistan.

Begu broke Cornet's serve all eight of her receiving games in a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Neither player had much success serving, as Begu was broken five times. But she won two-thirds of the points off Cornet's serve and finished off eight of her 12 break points.

No. 2-seeded Urszula Radwanska rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vitalia Diatchenko. She won almost three-quarters of the points on serve while taking 54 percent of the points when Diatchenko served. Radwanska ended up with five breaks.

Fifth-seeded Alexandra Cadantu came from behind for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Sabina Sharipova while No. 6-seeded Bojana Jovanovski was also pushed to a third set before advancing over Eleni Daniilidou 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3.

No. 7-seeded Alexandra Panova took out Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-4 and eighth-seeded Galina Voskoboeva was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Anna Chakvetadze.

Other results Wednesday, which saw all eight second-round matches completed, had Eva Birnerova stop Karin Knapp 6-2, 6-2 and qualifier Donna Vekic defeat Lara Arruabarrena-Veci also 6-2, 6-2.
