MONTREAL, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Patrice Bernier scored two goals and assisted on another Saturday, powering the Montreal Impact to their fifth straight win, 3-0 over D.C. United.
Marco Di Vaio gave the Impact the lead for good in the 24th minute, beating United's offside trap, collecting Bernier's through-ball and bending a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Bernier doubled the lead in the 50th minute with a penalty kick following a foul on D.C. defender Emiliano Dudar and netted another in stoppage time on a deflected shot.
The victory gave the expansion Impact (12-13-3) 39 points, one point behind United (12-9-4) in the race for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
D.C., however, has three games in hand over Montreal.
