COQUITLAM, British Columbia, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Fifteen-year-old amateur Lydia Ko got closer to a historic win Saturday, carding an even-par 72 to take the third-round lead at the Canadian Women's Open.
Ko, who became the youngest player ever to win a professional event earlier this year at age 14, would add the mantle of youngest-ever to capture an LPGA event should she hang on through Sunday's final round.
Ko claimed January's Women's NSW Open in Sydney to set the record.
She registered a pair of 4-under 68s in the Canadian Open's first two rounds, finishing Saturday's play with a one-shot lead at 8-under 208.
No amateur has won an LPGA event since JoAnne Carner in 1969.
Tour money leader Stacy Lewis carded a 6-under 66 to move into a second-place tie at minus-7 with former world No. 1 Jiyai Shin (69), Inbee Park (70) and second-round co-leader Chella Choi (73).
Two shots further back were Sydnee Michaels (69) and Moira Dunn (72).
