Cuban women ballplayers missing in Canada

EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Three women's baseball players disappeared from a Cuban team playing in an international tournament in Edmonton, Canada, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Ron Hayter, executive director of the Edmonton Baseball Federation, said the three unnamed players were first noticed absent during the Sunday closing ceremonies of the World Cup of Women's Baseball, The Edmonton Journal reported.

Hayter said he was unsure if Cuban baseball officials had found the players, adding he suspected they defected to the United States.

The trio's disappearances followed an incident earlier in the tournament involving Cuban team captain Odreisleisis Pequero Del Sol, 21, who disappeared from her dorm room at the University of Alberta last week.

It was later discovered Pequero and her boyfriend had defected to the United States, the Journal reported.
