HARRISON, N.J., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Heath Pearce scored in the 83rd minute Sunday, completing Red Bull New York's rally from 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 victory over Portland.
Substitute Kenny Cooper began New York's comeback in the 42nd minute when he headed home a cross from Jan Gunnar Solli -- his 14th tally of the season.
New York got the equalizer only 3 minutes later when Tim Cahill fired home the rebound of a Dax McCarthy shot that bounced off Portland defender David Horst.
Pearce then completed the comeback with a header off a Solli cross and New York (13-7-6) moved within one point behind Sporting Kansas City for the Eastern Conference top spot.
Bright Dike and Darlington Nagbe scored for the Timbers (5-13-7).
