MLB: Atlanta 6, San Diego 0

ATLANTA, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Kris Medlen, a sensation since his entry into the Atlanta rotation, threw his first career shutout Thursday in carrying the Braves to a 6-0 win over San Diego.

After making 38 relief appearances this year, Medlen (4-1) has made four starts and has allowed no more than one earned run in any of them.

He gave up five hits, struck out six and walked none in bringing Atlanta its third straight win. The Braves have already announced Medlen will get at least one more start while they use a six-man rotation through the rest of this month.

Medlen threw just 104 pitches and did not allow more than one base runner in any inning.

Chipper Jones backed up Medlen with two homers -- a two-run shot in the first and a solo blast during a four-run fifth inning. Jason Heyward also homered in the fifth.

The loss went to Jason Marquis (8-11), who gave up six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
