MLB: Minnesota 9, Detroit 3

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Darin Mastroianni went 3-for-5 with three RBI Monday and the Minnesota Twins banged out 18 hits in their 9-3 victory over Detroit.

Mastroianni's solo homer in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie, putting the Twins ahead for good, and he added a two-run single in the sixth for a 5-1 Minnesota lead.

Ryan Doumit provided three hits, including a three-run homer, and Joe Mauer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored as the Twins claimed the opener of a three-run series.

Samuel Deduno (4-0) won for the third time in four starts, allowing three runs on seven hits over seven full frames. The right-hander overcame five walks while striking out six.

Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez (1-3) was lit up for 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings, yielding five runs.

Miguel Cabrera, Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta drove in runs for the second-place Tigers, who remained two games behind the American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox despite losing for the fifth time in six games.
