LONDON, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia sprinted away as the final lap began Friday and cruised to her second straight victory in the Olympic 10,000-meter run.

Dibaba, after running almost a half hour, still had enough energy left to pick up the pace in what was a near sprint during the last 400 meters.

The stunning performance brought her to the finish line almost six seconds in front of Sally Kipyego of Kenya in the time of 30:20.75.

Dibaba brought an end to the first day of track and field at the Olympics. The only other final saw Tomasz Majewski of Poland win the shot put over Germany's David Storl and American Reese Hoffa.

Like Dibaba, Majewski won his specialty for the second Olympics in a row.

It was the third gold medal for Dibaba, who also won the 5,000-meter run in Beijing.

The rest of Friday's action consisted of qualifying races in various events, highlighted by a 10.83 turned in by Carmelita Jeter while she was winning her heat in the 100-meter dash.

It was the fastest time among the qualifiers. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who led a Jamaican sweep of the 100 medals in 2008, coasted to an 11.00 in winning her heat.
