PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Coach Peter Laviolette has been given a contract extension by the Philadelphia Flyers, the NHL team said Wednesday.
Laviolette, 47, is entering his fourth season as the Flyers' coach. Terms of the contract, such as financial considerations and length of the deal, weren't announced.
"We are thrilled to have Peter continue his work with our group as we push to compete for the Stanley Cup," said General Manager Paul Holmgren. "Peter has done a terrific job for us and is very deserving of this extension."
Laviolette took over the Flyers in December 2009 and guided the team on a playoff run that ended in the 2010 Stanley Cup finals. The team is 122-73 with 26 overtime losses under Laviolette.
Philadelphia has had 47 wins each of the last two seasons and topped 100 points each of those years. However, the team had been beaten in the second round of the playoffs each year.
Laviolette previously coached at Carolina, taking the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup title in 2006, and the New York Islanders. His overall coaching record is 366-257-25 with 60 overtime losses.
