LONDON, July 29 (UPI) -- Highlights of Saturday's Olympic action:

-- Michael Phelps, with more Olympic gold medals than anyone else, could not win a medal of any color in the finals of the 400-meter individual medley. He finished fourth while teammate Ryan Lochte rolled to a decisive victory. Phelps will swim again Sunday in the 100-meter butterfly.

-- China won two gold medals in swimming, one more than it collected during the entire 2008 Olympics. The Chinese had four wins overall on the first full day of competition and had six total medals. The United States had the one gold from Lochte and four overall.

-- The U.S. women's basketball and soccer teams, both defending champions, won. It was the opening group game for the basketball team and the 3-0 victory for the soccer team over Colombia wrapped up a quarterfinal berth.

-- A tremendous qualifying effort put the American men's gymnastics team on top while the Chinese surprisingly stumbled to sixth. Danell Leyva of the United States had the leading individual total.

-- After setting a world record in qualifying, the South Korean archery squad seemed set to win the gold medal. Instead, the United States upset the South Koreans in the semifinals. Italy then downed the Americans in the gold medal match.

-- Italy swept the medals in women's individual foil. The bronze medal was won by Valentina Vezzali, who had won the gold medal in each of the previous three Olympics. She was denied in her bid to become the first woman in history to win the same event in four straight Olympics.

-- Taehwan Park of South Korea was the defending champion in the 400-meter freestyle and looked strong in the prelims. After his qualifying heat, however, a judge said Park had moved slightly before the starting tone sounded and was being disqualified. A study of replays did not show any movement. Park was reinstated and he eventually finished second to China's Sun Yang.

-- Kazakhstan's Alexandr Vinikurov, 38, won the cycling road race with a late sprint, leaving home favorite Mark Cavendish far back in the pack. Vinikurov has already retired once and this might have been the final race of his cycling career.
