Japan tops Spain in Olympic soccer
LONDON, July 26 (UPI) -- Yuki Otsu converted a corner kick for a goal Thursday in Japan's 1-0 upset of Spain in the first day of men's soccer play at the 2012 Olympics.
Otsu's goal off a kick from Takahiro Ohgihara in the 34th minute stunned a Spanish team that includes members of the recent Euro 2012 championship squad.
The men's soccer Olympic tournament is contested among under-23 teams with three overage players allowed on each team.
Shortly after Otsu scored, Spain's Inigo Martinez was sent off, leaving the Spanish a man down the rest of the Group D game.
Also in Group D, Jerry Bengtson had two goals in a 9-minute span of the second half in helping Honduras tie Morocco 2-2. Bengston's second goal came in the 67th minute and put Honduras up 2-1 but Morocco's Zakaria Labyad scored 2 minutes later to tie the score.
Mexico and South Korea, with Jose Corona and Jung Sung-ryong, respectively, in goal, played to a 0-0 tie in Group B. Gabon and Switzerland also played to a Group B draw, with each scoring in the first half of a 1-1 tie.
Brazil, scoring three times in the first 30 minutes, defeated Egypt 3-2 and Belarus got a goal near the end of the first half for a 1-0 win over New Zealand in Group C.
Uruguay rallied for a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates and Senegal salvaged a 1-1 tie against Great Britain with an 82nd minute goal in Group A.
Brewers: Greinke will be traded
MILWAUKEE, July 26 (UPI) -- Milwaukee Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin says the team will trade pitcher Zack Greinke before next week's non-waiver trade deadline, USA Today reported.
The newspaper said the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels are trying to acquire Greinke -- who is in the final season of a four-year deal worth $38 million.
Greinke, 28, has a personal 15-game home winning streak and is 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 21 starts overall this season.
"There are so many good things about him, it's going to be difficult when we trade him," Melvin said.
He said the decision to trade Greinke was made after the Brewers went 0-6 on their most recent road trip. Milwaukee went into a home game against the Washington Nationals Thursday with a 44-53 record, 13 1/2 games behind first-place Cincinnati in the National League Central.
Greinke is 85-76 with an ERA of 3.79 in 259 career appearances -- 218 of them starts.
The non-waiver trading deadline is July 31.
Miami, Boston to open NBA 2012-13 season
NEW YORK, July 26 (UPI) -- The Miami Heat will open their NBA title defense at home against the Boston Celtics when the NBA 2012-13 season opens, the league announced Thursday.
The Oct. 30 contest will be a rematch of last season's Eastern Conference semifinals, which Miami won after Boston had taken a 3-2 series lead. It will pit former Celtic Ray Allen against his old team, in his first game with the Heat, which signed him as a free agent during the off-season.
Opening Night will also feature Steve Nash, in his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers, taking on the visiting 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks.
The schedule has five Christmas Day games -- the Celtics at the Brooklyn Nets; the New York Knicks at the LA Lakers; the Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami, in a rematch of the 2011-12 playoff finalists; followed by Houston at Chicago and Denver at the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Nets open the season in their new home Nov. 1 against the Knicks.
Jeremy Lin will make his debut with Houston in a road game at Detroit Oct. 31.
The all-star game is set for Feb. 17, 2013, in Houston.
The regular season ends April 17 and the post-season begins April 20.
Piercy grabs lead at Canadian Open
ANCASTER, Ontario, July 26 (UPI) -- Scott Piercy shot a course-record 8-under 62 Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Canadian Open.
Greg Owen and William McGirt both fired a 7-under 63, matching the previous record set in 2006 by Jim Furyk and Brett Quigley.
Robert Garrigus was in fourth place at 6-under 64, while Stuart Appleby, Vijay Singh, Charl Schwartzel, Gavin Coles, Bo Van Pelt, Jhonattan Vegas and Troy Matteson shared fifth at 5-under 65.
Defending champion Sean O'Hair was far back after shooting 5-over 75 in the opening round, which was delayed 20 minutes by rain at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ancaster, Ontario.
