BOSTON, July 19 (UPI) -- Cody Ross hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning Thursday, rallying the Boston Red Sox to a dramatic 3-1 decision over the Chicago White Sox.
Chicago starter Jose Quintana shut out the Red Sox on five hits over eight innings, but relievers Matt Thornton and Addison Reed combined to let the game get away in the ninth.
Carl Crawford singled off Thornton (2-6) to open the inning and was erased at second on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Dustin Pedroia.
Adrian Gonzalez then singled and Reed came on to replace Thornton. Ross promptly hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left.
The big hit from Ross came one night after he had hit two three-run blasts in a 10-1 win over the White Sox. Ross has 61 hits this season and 16 of them have been homers.
Boston won three times in the four-game series.
Alfredo Aceves (1-6) got the win after working the top of the ninth in relief of Clay Buchholz. It took 45 appearances this season for Aceves to record his first victory.
The only Chicago run came in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Alex Rios.
