MLB: St. Louis 3, Milwaukee 2

MILWAUKEE, July 17 (UPI) -- Allen Craig's RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning capped a rally Monday that carried the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over Milwaukee.

Trailing 2-0 and facing Brewers closer John Axford (2-6) in their final at-bat, the Cards stunned Milwaukee by scoring three times to grab the lead.

Matt Carpenter led off with a walk but Lance Berkman and Carlos Beltran each flew out to put St. Louis on the brink of a loss. Rafael Furcal, however, kept the rally alive with a single and Skip Schumaker coaxed a walk to load the bases.

Matt Holliday then grounded a single into right field for two runs, tying the game and sending Schumaker to second. Craig followed the decisive blow -- looping an 0-2 pitch into left for the go-ahead RBI single.

Jason Motte (4-3) earned with victory with 1 2/3 scoreless innings as the Cards took the opener of a three-game series.

Corey Hart socked a solo homer for Milwaukee.
