Cards' Carpenter set for surgery, shelved

ST. LOUIS, July 3 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals said Tuesday pitcher Chris Carpenter will miss the rest of the 2012 campaign after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Carpenter, 37, has been on the injured list since the start of the season due to numbness and weakness in his right shoulder.

He began throwing sessions in mid-June, but later in the month sat out a live batting practice session. Carpenter was eventually diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and Dr. Gregory Pearl of Dallas will perform the surgery, the Cardinals said.

Carpenter was 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA over 34 regular-season starts in 2011 and 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in six post-season starts.

The 14-year veteran is 144-92 mark with a 3.76 ERA and 1,685 strikeouts in 347 career games.
