MINNEAPOLIS, June 30 (UPI) -- Scott Diamond held the Royals to two runs over eight innings Saturday, helping Minnesota best Kansas City 7-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Diamond (7-3) issued a pair of runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four for Minnesota, which evened its four-game series at one victory apiece.
Alexi Casilla's two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth inning that put the contest away, while Trevor Plouffe provided a solo homer and run-scoring double for the Twins.
Ryan Doumit, signed to a $7 million, two-year extension Friday, provided two hits and an RBI in the victory.
Royals starter Jonathan Sanchez (1-4) was tagged for six runs on 10 hits and six walks in a 4 1/3-inning stint, his fourth appearance since missing 31 games with left biceps tendinitis.
