LOS ANGELES, June 29 (UPI) -- Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig has been signed to a 7-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the National League team said Friday.
Puig, 21, hit .330 with 17 home runs and 47 runs batted in in 327 at-bats with Cienfuegos in 2010-11. He is expected to report to the Dodgers' training facility in Glendale, Ariz.
"Scouting and signing talent in Latin America is critical and this signing shows ownership's commitment to reengage in the region and dedicate ourselves to getting stronger in this area," said Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti.
"We feel that Yasiel can be an outstanding Major League player for the organization."
The last Cuban-born position player for player for the Dodgers was Zoilo Versalles in 1968.
