LONDON, June 25 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and third-seeded Roger Federer sailed through first-round matches Monday, the opening day of the Wimbledon Championships.
Djokovic defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, losing his serve just once while taking nearly 70 percent of the points on serve. Djokovic ended up with six breaks.
Federer had just 10 unforced errors as he ran over Albert Ramos 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in 79 minutes. Ramos managed a first-set break but Federer didn't see a break point while finishing with eight breaks himself.
No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych was one of four men's seeded players defeated Monday when he dropped three tiebreakers -- 7-5 (7-5), 7-5 (7-4), 7-5 (7-4) to Ernests Gulbis. Gulbis fired 30 aces and won 77 percent of the points on serve. Each player lost serve once but Gulbis came through in the tiebreakers.
Alejandro Falla ousted 11th-seeded John Isner 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 while Denis Istomin got past No. 23-seeded Andreas Seppi 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 8-6; and Viktor Troicki edged No. 24 Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 2-6, 8-6.
Eighth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic out-battled David Nalbandian for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win. He had twice as many winners as unforced errors (40-20).
No. 13-seeded Gilles Simon advanced when Paul-Henri Mathieu retired in the second set, and 15th-seeded Juan Monaco got past Leonard Mayer 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in a match that featured just one break.
Other seeded players advancing Monday included 17th-seeded Fernando Verdasco, No. 18 Richard Gasquet, 26th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, No. 28 Radek Stepanek, 29th-seeded Julien Benneteau and No. 31 Florian Mayer.
Unseeded winners on the first day of the tournament were Grega Zemlja, Jeremy Chardy, Michael Russell, Ryan Sweeting, Philipp Petzschner, Inigo Cervantes-Huegen, Ruben Bemelmans, Benjamin Becker, Martin Klizan, Fabio Fognini, Igor Andreev, Guillaume Ruffin, Jerzy Janowicz, Ryan Harrison, Xavier Malisse,
Harrison next takes on Djokovic while Fognini's win earned his a second-round match with Federer.
