NEW YORK, May 29 (UPI) -- Rookie pitcher Jeremy Hefner socked a homer en route to his first major league victory Tuesday, boosting the New York Mets to a 6-3 win over Philadelphia.
Hefner (1-2), making his second career start and fourth overall appearance, surrendered three runs on six hits over six full innings. The right-hander didn't issue a walk and struck out four.
The 26-year-old helped himself out with a solo shot in the fourth inning that staked New York to a 4-2 lead.
Scott Hairston added a pinch-hit, two-run homer and Omar Quintanilla went 3-for-4 with two runs scored as the Mets evened their three-game series.
Phillies starter Joe Blanton (4-5) lasted five innings during which he yielded six runs on nine hits.
Brian Schneider contributed a solo homer for Philadelphia.
