Angels reactivate outfielder Hunter

ANAHEIM, Calif., May 29 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter was reactivated following a 15-game absence to deal with his son's legal problems, the team said Tuesday.

The veteran all-star was placed on the restricted list May 14 when he left the team following the arrest of his 17-year-old son Darius McClinton-Hunter, who is facing sexual assault charges in Texas.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Hunter worked out with the team Monday in Anaheim, Calif., before the squad's game against the New York Yankees.

Hunter, 36, is batting .256 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 33 contests this season.

The Angels went 10-5 during his absence and are riding a season-high seven-game winning streak.

Hunter's son, who lives in Prosper, Texas, is one of five people arrested in the alleged sexual-assault of a 16-year-old girl.

The Orange County Register reported Hunter said he is confident the charge against his son will be dropped by prosecutors "hopefully in the coming week or soon." The newspaper said defense attorneys had given authorities an audio recording and other evidence indicating the girl had retracted her claims regarding Hunter's son.

Hunter said his son was "disappointed, embarrassed."

"His name has been out there … for sexual assault. I had to stay there to make sure he was OK," Hunter said.
