ANAHEIM, Calif., May 29 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Angels ace pitcher Jered Weaver has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower-back injury, the team said Tuesday.

The right-hander exited Monday's start against the New York Yankees in the first inning after tossing only 12 pitches.

The all-star hurler was diagnosed with inflammation around a disk and will likely miss at least three weeks, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"It's disappointing missing two or three starts, but I'm going to work my tail off to do whatever it takes to get back on the mound," Weaver told the newspaper.

He had compiled a 6-1 record with a 2.61 ERA over 11 starts this season.

The Angels recalled 24-year-old right-hander Garrett Richards from Class AAA Salt Lake to take Weaver's spot on the roster.
