Temps soar on eve of Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS, May 26 (UPI) -- Sunny skies and temperatures deep into the 90s were in the forecast for Sunday's Indianapolis 500.
The National Weather Service said Saturday there was no rain the forecast for race day but highs could hit 97 with a heat index of around 100 degrees.
The sultry temperatures could take a toll on the thousands of spectators who will be in the stand at the Speedway Sunday, and drivers and pit crews face a potentially rugged day as well as potential on-track temps reaching a dizzying 140.
The race course was turned over to the Legends race Saturday following the final practice laps the previous day.
Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon turned in the fastest times in Friday's workouts with speeds around 222.3 mph. Franchitti said his Honda-powered Target Chip Ganassi Racing car experienced some slipperiness on the sun-baked course.
Arizona gives extension to catcher Montero
PHOENIX, May 26 (UPI) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks called a news conference Saturday to announce that catcher Miguel Montero agreed to a five-year contract extension.
The deal will nail down the budding 28-year-old star, who was an all-star last season and faced free agency after this season.
Terms of the agreement were not announced but Foxsports.com said the pact was worth about $60 million.
Montero hit 18 home runs and hit .282 last season. He was hitting .255 with two homers heading into Saturday's game.
Indians' Santana idled with concussion
CLEVELAND, May 26 (UPI) -- Cleveland Indians catcher Carlos Santana has been placed on the disabled list with a concussion, the team said Saturday.
Santana was put on the seven-day DL following the Friday's 9-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
The catcher came out of the game in the eighth inning when he was hit square on the mask with a foul tip.
Taking his spot on the roster was catcher Luke Carlin, who was recalled from Class AAA Columbus.
The Tribe also moved reliever Rafael Perez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
London Olympics tickets go unsold
LONDON, May 26 (UPI) -- Thousands of tickets to London Olympics events that went on sale this week had not been sold three days later, officials said.
Some of the tickets were to events like beach volleyball, boxing and basketball that are usually in high demand, The Daily Telegraph reported. The reason for the slow sales appears to be difficulties with the Ticketmaster Web site.
Almost 1 million "contingency" tickets were released, and 300,000 were still available, the Telegraph said.
The organizing committee says 4.6 million tickets have been sold for the games out of a total of 6.6 million available. Most of the unsold tickets are to Paralympic events and soccer matches -- as well as the 300,000 "contingency" tickets and another 2 percent of total tickets being held back for possible last-minute seating changes.
