MLB: New York Mets 9, San Diego 0

NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- Johan Santana tossed a four-hit shutout and the New York Mets socked three homers Saturday in their 9-0 rout of San Diego.

Santana (2-2) dominated the Padres, tossing 74 of his 96 pitches for strikes, and didn't allow a walk in hurling his ninth career whitewash.

The left-hander struck out seven, setting down 14 straight Padres as the Mets improved to five games over .500 at 26-21, matching a season high.

Scott Hairston set the tone with a three-run shot first inning and Vinny Rottino added his first major-league clout in the initial frame, while Mike Nickeas later added a grand slam to cap Mets' win.

Padres starter Clayton Richard (2-6) was touched for four runs on five hits over six innings, walking three and fanning five.
