Wickmayer, Arvidsson score Brussels upsets

BRUSSELS, May 22 (UPI) -- Belgian favorite Yanina Wickmayer and Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson scored first-round upsets Tuesday in the first round of the Brussels Open.

Wickmayer rallied after dropping the first set to upend No. 5 seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. She goes on to face fourth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

Arvidsson surprised No. 7 seed Peng Shuai 7-5, 6-3. Peng was last year's Brussels runner-up.

South African Chanelle Scheepers got past ninth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 7-5, 6-2 and eighth-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi dispatched American Irina Falconi 6-3, 6-2.
