Ex-WVU coach Bill Stewart dies at 59
MORGANTOWN, W.Va., May 21 (UPI) -- Former West Virginia head football Coach Bill Stewart died of an apparent heart attack while golfing Monday, school officials said.
The 59-year-old Stewart, who compiled a 28-12 record over four seasons at the helm of the Mountaineers, was taken by ambulance from Stonewall Resort near Roanoke to a local hospital, where was pronounced dead, the officials said.
He is survived by his wife, Karen, and son Blaine, who is completing his junior year at Morgantown, W.V., High School, The Charleston Gazette reported.
"He was a compassionate, energetic, and kind person," WVU President Jim Clements said. "He loved his family dearly and was extremely community-oriented and very giving of his time. He will be greatly missed."
The school said Stewart was golfing with former WVU Athletic Director Ed Pastilong when he succumbed.
Stewart took over the head football job following the departure of Rich Rodriguez to Michigan before the end of the 2007 campaign.
He resigned in June 2011 following accusations he had tried to steer reporters into probing the personal life of current Coach Dana Holgorson, who was then the team's offensive coordinator.
Mistrial declared in DJ Williams' DUI case
DENVER, May 21 (UPI) -- The drunken driving trial of Denver Broncos linebacker Genos "DJ" Williams ended Monday with a county judge granting a motion for a mistrial.
A Denver County Court judge ruled Williams' trial on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol to be over after defense attorney Harvey Steinberg argued he wasn't allowed to challenge the correct number of potential jurors, The Denver Post reported.
Steinberg claimed he was able to strike only two jurors when the defense is entitled to three, the report said.
The trial was subsequently rescheduled for Aug. 15, when the player will again face DUI charges stemming from a 2010 police stop.
The linebacker, one of the Broncos' longest-serving veterans, also pleaded guilty to driving while ability impaired in 2005. A second conviction could lead to disciplinary action by the NFL.
Williams has already been banned for the first six contests of the upcoming season after violating of league rules on performance-enhancing drugs, the Post reported.
Rangers' Feliz shelved with sore elbow
ARLINGTON, Texas, May 21 (UPI) -- Texas Rangers pitcher Neftali Feliz has been shelved with right elbow inflammation, the team said Monday.
Feliz was placed on the 15-day disabled after compiling a 3-1 record with a 3.16 ERA in eight games, including seven starts, for Texas this season.
Feliz was moved from the closer's role he played on the Rangers' two American League Championship teams of 2010 and 2011 to a spot in the starting rotation.
The hurler felt tightness in his shoulder during spring training but recovered in time to make his first career start last month.
The Rangers recalled 36-year-old pitcher Yoshinori Tateyama from Class AAA Round Rock to take his spot on the roster.
Tateyama went 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 39 relief outings last season for Texas.
Surgery to end pitcher Luebke's season
SAN DIEGO, May 21 (UPI) -- San Diego Padres pitcher Cory Luebke said Monday he will miss the rest of the season after opting to undergo elbow surgery.
The Padres left-hander told reporters the reconstructive surgery, to be performed this week, will repair the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow.
The former 2007 first-round draft pick has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 2.
Luebke compiled a 3-1 record with a 2.61 ERA over five starts this season before going on the DL. He boasts a 10-12 record with a 3.25 ERA in 55 games during his three-year career with the Padres.
Pitcher Matt Palmer joined the team from Class AAA Tucson to take Luebke's roster spot.
