Jankovic eliminated in Brussels event

BRUSSELS, May 21 (UPI) -- Romanian Simona Halep knocked sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic out of the Brussels Open Monday, outlasting the ex-world No. 1 player in three sets.

Halep won 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), advancing to the second round of the event, which is considered a tuneup for the French Open.

In another upset, American Christina McHale eliminated fourth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Other winners included Russian Nadia Petrova, Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria and Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium.

Carolina Wozniacki of Denmark is not back to defend the title she won last year.
