MLB: Chicago Cubs 3, St. Louis 2

CHICAGO, April 23 (UPI) -- Joe Mather's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth Monday rallied the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 victory over St. Louis.

Trailing 2-1 entering their final at-bat, the Cubs got one-out walks from Bryan LaHair and Geovany Soto off Cardinals closer Jason Motte (1-1). Both moved up a base on Steve Clevenger's groundout, and that set the table for Mather, who scalded a two-strike pitch up the middle to chase home both runners for the winning margin.

The rally handed a victory to Rafael Dolis (1-1), who tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief as Chicago took the first contest of a three-game set against the National League Central leaders.

Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina each drove in a run for the Cardinals.

St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia got a no-decision after shutting down the Cubs on one run over 7 2/3 innings.
