ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 21 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay's James Shields allowed only one run over eight innings Saturday and the Rays scored three runs in the sixth inning to best Minnesota 4-1.
Shields (3-0) won for third time in four April starts, taming the Twins on five hits while striking out seven and issuing a pair of walks.
The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.76 with the victory, which evened the Rays' three-game set against Minnesota.
The game was scoreless until the sixth when Tampa Bay broke through with three runs on B.J. Upton's bases-loaded single and center fielder Denard Span's error.
Carl Pavano (1-2) was saddled with the loss despite yielding only two earned runs on seven hits over six frames. He struck out seven.
Ryan Doumit collected Minnesota's only RBI.
