MLB: Minnesota 7, New York Yankees 3

NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) -- Carl Pavano recovered from a shaky start to toss seven strong innings Monday and the Minnesota Twins banged out 14 hits in a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees.

Pavano (1-1) surrendered solo homers to the first two batters he faced -- Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson -- and then yielded another first-inning run before settling down to blank New York over the next six frames.

The former Yankee allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out six for the Twins.

Joe Mauer went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and Justin Morneau socked a solo homer among his two hits as Minnesota won for only the third time this season.

Yankees starter Freddie Garcia (0-1) was touched for five runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He didn't issue a walk and fanned five.
