Capriati elected to Tennis Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I., April 13 (UPI) -- Jennifer Capriati, who won three major tournament titles in her career, has been selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Capriati won 14 WTA titles, including the Australian Open in 2001 and 2002 and the French Open in 2001. She was ranked No. 1 in the world four times from October 2001 through June 2002.

"I am thrilled to learn that I have been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame," Capriati said in a statement. "This is a dream come true and an extraordinary tribute."

Capriati burst on the tennis scene in 1990 when, as a 13-year-old, she reached the finals of her first WTA event. She picked up her first tournament title later that year after turning 14.

Personal problems, including arrests for shoplifting and the possession of marijuana, kept her off the court for much of 1994 and 1995. But in 2001 she won the Australian Open and the French Open and was a semifinalist at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Capriati, elected to the Hall in the Recent Player category, will join a 2012 class that includes former men's world No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten; Spanish tennis legend Manuel Orantes; tennis administrator and promoter Mike Davies; and wheelchair tennis star Randy Snow, who will be honored posthumously.

The 2012 inductions will be July 14 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.
