Plaxico Burress ordered to report finances

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 12 (UPI) -- A Florida woman injured in a collision with NFL free agent Plaxico Burress may have to get the damages he owes "the hard way," her lawyer said.

A judge in Broward County ordered Burress to list his assets and income on a financial disclosure form for Alise Smith of Miami, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported. Circuit Judge Richard Eade gave Burress a mid-May deadline.

A jury awarded Smith $125,000 for the May 2008 crash at a toll plaza on the Florida Turnpike in Tamarac. Burress, driving without vehicle insurance, struck Smith's car with his Mercedes.

Anthony Quackenbush said Burress appears to have taken no steps to pay his client.

"The general sense is that we are going to have to get the money the hard way," Quackenbush said.

Adam Swickle, Burress's lawyer, said he is appealing the verdict based on "numerous errors" in the trial.

Burress, 34, now a free agent, played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants before being convicted on a gun charge when he shot himself accidentally in a New York nightclub. After his release from prison he played last season for the New York Jets, signing a one-year contract for a reported $3 million.
