Al Unser Jr. pleads guilty in DUI

ALBUQUERQUE, April 12 (UPI) -- Auto racing superstar Al Unser Jr. pleaded guilty to drunken driving and drag racing in a 2011 incident on an Albuquerque freeway, his attorney said.

Unser, an admitted alcoholic, acknowledged his mistakes to a judge Wednesday, apologized to the community and pledged to make changes in his life, KOAT-TV, Albuquerque, reported.

The Indy 500 driver pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge and drag racing, receiving an 89-day suspended sentence instead of jail time.

Unser was caught racing a sport utility vehicle on Paseo del Norte in late 2011. He was accused of racing at 100 mph, KOAT said.

Deputies said he had a blood-alcohol level that was twice the legal limit.

"Al Unser apologized to the community, to the court system, to everybody involved in those poor decisions that night," attorney Sam Bregman said.

Bregman said Unser will be subject to random drug screenings, but will be allowed to travel out of state for work-related events.
