Twins' Baker needs surgery, out for year

MINNEAPOLIS, April 11 (UPI) -- Minnesota Twins right-handed starter Scott Baker needs surgery on his forearm and won't pitch this season, the team announced Wednesday.

Baker, who began the season on the disabled list, will have surgery to repair a damaged flexor pronator tendon in his right forearm, followed by six months of recovery and rehabilitation, Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said.

Baker, 30, posted an 8-6 record with a 3.14 ERA last season, tossing 134 2/3 innings over 21 starts for Minnesota.

"As you know, it's been a battle," Baker told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Unfortunately, it's a losing battle at this point."

Over his six-year career with Minnesota, the Oklahoma State product has compiled a 63-48 mark with a 4.15 ERA.
