VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 8 (UPI) -- Roberto Luongo had to make just 17 saves for his fifth shutout of the season Saturday in a 3-0 blanking of Edmonton that gave Vancouver the NHL's best record.
The Canucks finished the regular season with 111 points, giving them the President's Trophy for the second straight year and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
The New York Rangers missed a chance to claim the league's best record earlier in the evening when they fell in their regular-season finale to Washington.
Vancouver will open the playoffs against either Los Angeles or San Jose, who battled each other late Saturday to determine the final two seeds in the Western Conference. The Canucks made it to the Stanley Cup finals last season before falling to Boston.
With the Oilers having nothing to play for and the Canucks having much at stake, Vancouver dominated the action throughout.
Nevertheless, Vancouver could not produce a goal until Henrik Sedin came through on the power play with 4:13 to go in the second period.
The Canucks put the game away with third-period goals from Samuel Pahlsson and David Booth.
Devan Dubnyk gave up the three Vancouver goals on 42 shots.
