Williams sisters advance at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C., April 3 (UPI) -- Former Charleston champions Venus and Serena Williams each advanced at the Family Circle Cup Tuesday after scoring victories.

Serena Williams, the 2008 winner, pounded out 11 aces in her 6-4, 6-4 second-round triumph over Russia's Elena Vesnina.

She saved 6-of-7 break opportunities in the straight-set win.

Her sister, former world No. 1 Venus Williams, used six aces to notch a first-round triumph with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Czech qualifier Iveta Benesova.

Venus claimed the Family Circle title in 2004. She will next face seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic, who won the Charleston title in 2007.

Second-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur, who took event in 2010, advanced to the third round Tuesday after dismissing American Jamie Hampton 6-0, 7-5 in 79 minutes.

Also logging second-round wins Tuesday were fourth-seeded Vera Zvonareva and No. 8 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Other first-round winners Tuesday included No. 12 Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia and No. 17 Marina Erakovic of New Zealand.
