Indians' Jimenez draws 5-game suspension

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 2 (UPI) -- Cleveland Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was suspended five games for his role in a spring training altercation, baseball officials said Monday.

Benches cleared after Jimenez struck former teammate Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies on the left elbow with a pitch Sunday during an exhibition game in Arizona.

Tulowitzki yelled at the one-time Rockies all-star while the pitcher threw his glove to ground and ran toward the batter's box.

The incident delayed the game and later prompted Rockies Manager Jim Tracy to call the Jimenez pitch a "gutless act," The Denver Post reported.

The hurler said he had no intention of apologizing to Tulowitzki, telling MLB.com, "No, why? He was calling me [names]. I said already that I didn't mean to hit him. It was a pitch that got away. I had five walks in the game. I was everywhere."

Commissioner Bud Selig thought otherwise, slapping the right-hander with a five-game suspension and fining him an undisclosed amount.

No Rockies were disciplined in the incident.
