Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said Pavano wasn't with the team for its spring training game against the Pittsburgh Pirates this week so no one had a chance to speak with him after the story broke in the Record-Journal newspaper of Meriden, Conn., the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported Friday.
"The first I heard of it was on the ride up here," Ryan said. "I haven't talked to Carl about it, and until I do, I'm not going to be able to give you much."
A search warrant affidavit filed by police when they seized a laptop and journal from the Southington, Conn., home of Christian Bedard, 36, indicates Bedard may have been trying to extort money from Pavano.
Police said Bedard claims he engaged in a romantic and sexual relationship with Pavano when they attended high school together. They said Bedard informed Pavano that he had a $1.2 million book deal to write about the experience but offered to reject the offer if Pavano buys him a navy Range Rover with tan leather.
