Magic vows to restore Dodgers' greatness

LOS ANGELES, March 28 (UPI) -- New Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson says he'll "do it right" as he and his partners attempt to rebuild the once-proud franchise into a winner.

Johnson, along with partners Stan Kasten and Mark Walter, Tuesday won the bidding to buy the bankrupt team from Frank McCourt, whose financial and personal problems resulted in fan backlash and mediocre on-field results.

The former Los Angeles Lakers basketball great told the Los Angeles Times Wednesday the trio of new owners will resurrect the Dodgers' former glory.

"You know I'm going to do this right," he said. "I would not be putting millions of my dollars into this if we weren't going to do it right.

"I take, very seriously, the honor of being a minority owner in an organization where Jackie Robinson played," he said. "I'll be there every day, fans will see me every day, I'll be working hard to spread the word about how we're going to make this a great franchise again.

"We are going to have all the resources available to us to put a championship team on the field," he said.

''We are privileged and honored to be the new custodians of this tradition, and we hope to usher it in for generations to come," Walter added.
