Hamilton won the pole with a time of 1 minute, 36.219 seconds over the 3.44-mile track, 0.15 of a tick ahead of Button.

"It has been a good weekend so far," Hamilton said. "I think it was a tough day for us with the changeable weather conditions and the temperatures climbing. We made some setup changes to the car, but nonetheless, still managed to do some good times."

Saturday's results were identical to the qualifying for last week's Australia Grand Prix, which was won by Button.

Michael Schumer of Mercedes took third position, followed by Mark Webber of Red Bull. Defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel finished sixth but will start in the No. 5 slot due to a penalty.
