Player accused of trying to smuggle pot

OSAKA, Japan, March 14 (UPI) -- An American player on a Japanese professional basketball team has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana from the United States into Japan.

Lynn Washington, 33, a player for the Osaka Evessa in the bj-League, allegedly conspired with his 32-year-old wife to smuggle more than 3 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $110,000 through international mail in November, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

Authorities said customs officials in Osaka discovered the marijuana using an X-ray machine in mail addressed to the wife, who was arrested by the Osaka prefectural police last month.

Police said they later determined her husband had been involved in the smuggling.

Washington, a California native, had played a role in the Evessa's three titles in the league's first three years, 2005-2007.
