Cameron Maybin gets extension from Padres

SAN DIEGO, March 3 (UPI) -- Cameron Maybin agreed to a five-year contract extension Saturday that will keep him with the San Diego Padres through the 2017 season.

The deal secured Maybin's fleet-footed presence in Petco Park's spacious center field and provides a bat in the middle of the lineup for the often-punchless Padres.

"Cameron has certainly emerged as a core player," Padres General Manager Josh Byrnes said in a written statement. "He has impressed us with his play and with his character. He has shown us that he is committed to the Padres, and we are happy to secure his rights through 2017."

Maybin, 24, hit .264 last season with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 40 stolen bases.

MLB.com said according to sources the extension was worth $25 million and buys out Maybin's three arbitration years.
