Errani eliminates top seed in Acapulco

ACAPULCO, Mexico, March 2 (UPI) -- Sara Errani recorded a surprisingly-easy 6-4, 6-1 decision over No. 1 seed Roberta Vinci Friday that put her in the title match of the Mexican Open.

Errani will meet Flavia Pennetta in the championship contest after Pennetta got past Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 6-2. Pennetta has been in the finals of this tournament seven of the last nine years and has won it twice.

Vinci won the opening two games of the first set and then faded while Errani was earning a trip to the sixth final of her career.

Errani has defeated Pennetta in three of their four meetings, the most recent of those coming two years ago. All of those contests have been played on clay, as will be their match Saturday.
