Obama's speech bumps up NFL start

NEW YORK, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The NFL's 2012 season-opening game will be played on a Wednesday rather than a Thursday to avoid a conflict with a speech by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The league's first game of the year will be bumped up from its traditional early-September Thursday night slot so it won't go up against the keynote speech to be delivered by Obama Sept. 6 at the Democratic National Convention, NFL officials said Tuesday.

The game will pit the Super Bowl champion New York Giants against an opponent to be determined at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

It will be the first NFL game to be played on a Wednesday since Sept. 22, 1948, when the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Detroit Lions 44-0 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
