Algorithms to miss Triple Crown

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Algorithms, undefeated and a leading Kentucky Derby candidate, will miss the entire Triple Crown with an injured right front leg.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Tuesday Algorithms, who was scratched from Sunday's Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park, has a fractured splint that will require surgery. He will ship Wednesday from the Palm Meadows training center to the Ocala Equine Hospital for the procedure.

"We are hoping that he only requires a minimal amount of time off," Pletcher said. "But he is definitely not going to make the Triple Crown."

Algorithms, a Bernardini colt, won both his starts as a 2-year-old, then returned with a 5-lengths victory over Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Hansen in the Grade III Holy Bull over a sloppy track at Gulfstream on Jan. 29.

Also, Thiskyhasnolimit, who broke down while pressing the pace in Saturday's Mineshaft Handicap at Fair Grounds, was reported recovering from surgery to his right fore. While the injury will end his racing career, Thiskyhasnolimit "is resting comfortably," said his trainer, Steve Asmussen. "We're cautiously optimistic" about his recovery, he added.

The 5-year-old son of Sky Mesa won six of 20 starts and earned $777,828.
